Performed by Sigiswald Kuijken and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The Symphony No. 86 in D major, Hoboken I86, is the fifth of the six Paris Symphonies numbers 8287 written by Joseph Haydn, and was written to be performed in Paris in 1787. He wrote it in Esterháza in 1786, but for an orchestra much larger, at the instigation of Count Claude d'Ogney. The work is in standard four movement form and scored for flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two trumpets, two horns, timpani and strings violin I, violin II, viola, cello, double bass. Sym in B flat 'La Reine De France': III. Menuetto: Allegretto - Trio. The Finale of the 86th exhibits the qualities of the interpretations here. It opens with an enthusiastic main theme played with gusto, followed by a slinky and memorable softer second subject. Kuijken brings energy to the faster louder music and finesse to the more delicate passages. The second theme of the Capriccio an unusual label for Haydn in the 86th has the same feel as the finales second subject, a very calm walking pace theme that has to be one of my favorite melodies from this artist.
