The Columbia Symphony Orchestra was an orchestra formed by Columbia Records strictly for the purpose of making recordings. In the 1950s, it provided a vehicle for some of Columbia's better known conductors and recording artists to record using only company resources. The musicians in the orchestra were contracted as needed for individual sessions and consisted of free-lance artists and often members of either the New York Philharmonic or the Los Angeles Philharmonic, depending on whether the recording. Bruno Walter conducting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in this recording of what many termed 'classic' of Mozart's last six Symphonies from the No. 35 'Haffner' through to the No. 41 'Jupiter'. I grew up with Ferenc Fricsay's vinyl LPs of these works, and felt that by comparison, even Karl Bohm sounded cumbersome at times, and Karajan a definite brute. When I first came by this set by Walter recently on the web, I did not have great expectations - what of Karajan's 'illustrious' set and Bohm's &ap.
