Coming almost three years after their excellent, unexpected, and infectious LP Electric, 2016's Super is the second album where the Pet Shop Boys call themselves electronic purists, holing up in the studio with returning producer Stuart Price and a mess of PCs, drum machines, and synths. The musical landscape is the same and still, it's not a sequel or a very proper follow-up. Pet Shop Boys' 13th studio album, SUPER, was released independently via their own label, and charted pretty well worldwide, peaking at number 3 in the UK and at number 1 on the US DanceElectronic Albums chart. Moreover, it sold 10,000 copies during its first week in the US. The Pop Kids was the lead single, which also made it to number 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs. The entire album centres around this theme, with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe crafting huge, claustrophobic club tracks with honest and, sometimes, tongue-in-cheek lyrical content. The album is the third instalment in the series of PSB albums produced by Stuart Price, following Electric in 2013 and Super in 2016. Captain America
I went through three copies before giving up. My US pressing from Concord Music Group has excessive surface noise and non-fill distortion on both sides. This is an overall poor pressing. The mastering also sounds overly compressed and lacks in dynamics and a clear sound stage. This may be a case where you're better off with the CD.

Hold on - there's a US pressing? Three more words

So...for the most part there are copies of this out there that do sound good, but has anyone come across one without IGD and a general loss of top-end during B6? It's enough to be a significant distraction from the music during at least the "clouds floating by" passage that should be the climax of the album, and the "no one will ever know" coda. I've had four copies of the album and a couple of replacement styli through my hands since this record was released so I'm pretty sure it's a widespread pressing defect, not a one-off or a problem with my system (my hundreds of other records by and large aren't affected). I'm just holding out for a repress as it's maybe my favourite PSB song of the decade. :(

my copy sounds great. I got it when it first released.

Very good album. I have this on vinyl and cd. The cd version is mastered excellently, but the vinyl version just does not sound right. I had 2 copies, one extremely warped one that skipped (which i returned) and the one I currently have. The first tracks sound good, but after the 3rd track, if has too much IGD, even with a new cartridge and having it properly set up. It needs a repress on black vinyl, because this version just sounds awful.

I must have got lucky with my white copy purchased from here for 12 pounds - this is a lush sounding record with superb sonics. After a few so-so albums over the past ten years, 'Super' is a solid return to form for the Pets with witty lyrics and cunning basslines - superb album :)

Just seen this reply - BF17160-01 A2 / B2 TImTom :)

Wondering if maybe it's been repressed - can I ask what matrix numbers you have?

I got my copy from Amazon and it sounds amazing! No skips, no distortion.

Been playing great for me. Sounds wonderful on vinyl. There is a lushness to it when listened to it this way that actually gives the electronics a weirdly organic feel. Just my opinion anyway.

I'm playing my copy of Super with a Stanton 680 HP with weight at 1.5. No issues at all. It's not a cheap pressing, but I don't think it feels like a 180 Gram LP.

Just got here to check the reviews concerning to pressing quality. Same issues with my copy.

Got my second copy. Same issue of non-fill on the first 2 tracks. I gave up listening after that. Going to stick to digital on this. Hopefully they repress, and not on coloured vinyl.

crazy mashine
Got my second copy from PSB store, same skipping problems, I can t listen to this album anymore coz all I think about is this rubish vinyl.

I've now had four copies through my hands (I got curious after getting the much better one, which was disc #2, as to whether I could find one that played absolutely perfectly) and while I've settled on one that sounds and plays the best of the four, I've made a few observations:This is fundamentally not a good pressing. It's possible to luck out and pick up a good copy but all four LPs were affected by non-fill - two badly, two less so. The most tracks I've heard affected in a single copy is six (A1 to A5 as well as B1); the fewest is one (just a couple of split-seconds on A1). Quality control should have picked this up: it clearly isn't isolated.Unrelated, I think, to the above, the mastering isn't great - there is identical distortion on the final minute or so of each side. It's soft and doesn't exactly ruin the album but it's far more degradation than I'd expect from the deck I'm using. Of 800 records or so, I have very few that get this bad at the end of sides. It's a sound I'd associate with an old, worn record, not a new one.Perhaps most worryingly, track A3 had two sticking points the first time I played through copy #4 - they were gone the second time I played the album but no new album should ever stick with an ortofon 2m bronze unless it's seriously defective. I had already run the disc through the Spin Clean so don't think static or dirt were at fault. So in essence, if you have a decent deck and love this album, it IS worth picking up on vinyl as by and large it sounds good, but you'll need a bit of patience and a discerning ear if you want a copy to play and enjoy.

I don't see 180 Gram vinyl listed anywhere. It doesn't really feel or sound like one. What do you think?

You were right! I got another copy from Amazon, and so far (middle of side A) none of that awful zipping sound in the left channel!

My copy plays fine! Thanks God, because, this is an amazing album! It is natural continuation of Electric: I love it!

POS white vinyl. why oh why record companies continue to press coloured vinyl is beyond me, as its not for sound quality.sounds OK, but the white vinyl always wipes out a bit of the top end. pressings seems OK except for one buzz on track one, however due to the POS white vinyl you can't check exactly what the problem is. will try and clean a bit more, otherwise will return for replacement

digytal soul
Colored vinyl in general is not necessarily bad. I have all the Depeche Mode colored 12" singles from the '80s, and most of them sound great. But white.... yes, I have had several issues with white vinyl.

upon first play of side 1, track 1 skipped twice and track 6 skipped once. eh, it came with a free yellow SUPER turntable mat, so it's ok if it has a couple issues. no biggie. still a good album.

My copy plays just fine so maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, I was using a linear tracking TT so maybe that made a difference.

Having had two copies, one of which was fine and the other of which was dreadful, I'm pretty sure the problem is non-fill as the user below suggests, meaning the noise would have been present on any setup. So enjoy the LP - you got lucky!

Prince Persie
First copy I got from psb store skipped on every track, replacement copy did the same,I rebalanced the needle now it plays perfect.

My pressing is poor. There's distortion on the first 2 tracks. Really annoying. I will be returning it.

I can confirm that not all copies suffer from this problem (which is, as identified by another user below, non-fill). I got my copy exchanged at rough trade and the replacement plays perfectly (except for a little, much softer, distortion at the very end of side 2). In addition the entire left channel is stronger. So there are duff copies around, but still some good ones. I take back my original review - when the disc isn't faulty, this pressing sounds fantastic!

Tried with my other cartridge, a Nagaoka MP-500, and the sporadic buzzing noises in the left channel are present in the same spots.

I had problems with my copy as well, skipping during Groovy. I sent mine back today for an exchange.

Looks like I lucked out here as my copy plays just fine. Very good album!

GOD! That pressing is horrible. My copy can't stop skipping several times at any place of the vinyl! Returning my copy to the store! Seems to be a huge mess that pressing. Hope they will do something about it

Super not happy, I'm returning my copy to pet shop boys store and get a refund. Super disaster that pressing

I have Stanton ST.150 turntable. When i have issues with vinyl skipping at the beginning, I usually play it in reverse so that stylus can get into the groove. About 5 times out of 10 this sorts it. But this is a rubbish/cheap pressing. I am taking this vinyl back to shop to be replaced. When you pay 20 odd quid for something that is meant to be quality/premium product - it's simply not acceptable

My pressing is also terrible. First of all, white vinyl is dirty with some black spots (bought it new), distortion in most of the tracks and skips on the last tracks of each side.

Although I must admit that there are a couple of points (i.e. in the middle of Happiness) where there is a fizzing/buzzing sound in the left channel, but looking at the record under a strong light it looks like non-fill rather than distortion.

No skipping in my copy, on a Technics SL1200 Mk2 with Ortofon Black cartridge (perfectly installed and aligned, and running at 1.6 grams). The black bits in white vinyl are almost unavoidable, they are simply tiny bits of black vinyl which went into the mix.The pressing has a bit of crackle, but I have heard MUCH worse: it's only occasional, never loud. My copy overall is quite nice.

My pressing is rubbish too. The 1st track on both sides skips over the 1st minute of music and another track skips too.

All is OK and SUPER here! Thank you!Great Voice and a great Sound!!!

How good is this album compared to their 12 prior? well, it is a return to form, it embraces their origins. It reminds me of Very, of Please. It sure is a departure from Release and from Elysium. Is it similar to Electric? Yes, very much so. Same producer. I am not a fan of their opening track. Happiness... that is a filler, not even quite good for a B Side.Speaking of, the B sides to the first single that springs off this album are outstanding. In Bits, could have very well made it into the album. Not too sure about the musical inspiration they used for Twenty Something... a variation of the infamous Raeggeton that rage in the lower class nightclubs in Colombia, Mexico, and other South and Central American Countries.Again, they were inspired by these exotic rythms, same as when they released Bilingual, with the opening tracks sounding somewhat 'latin'.Definitely a good album, minus one or two songs that could have been on their consecutive singles, as filler material.Time to wait and see if a special edition or a luxury release is made and sold to the elite, via the Vinyl Factory.Would like to see a museum quality version of this latest installment.
