After the release of their previous studio album, Nightlife, it was originally planned that they would release a greatest hits collection in the autumn of 2000 with the two new tracks Positive Role Model and Somebody Else's Business. The great thing is, even if this sentiment has been present in previous Pet Shop Boys albums, they have brought the dance-club to the background partially due to Marr's presence and have brought the songs to the forefront, resulting in a record that feels like the Pet Shop Boys, even when it doesn't sound like them. And that's a good thing, since it retains their greatest attributes while giving them a new spin, and it makes for the best Pet Shop Boys album in nearly ten years

Siramath

The kind of "Release" fans dream of. The album itself was never a favorite among PSB fans, though I personally enjoy the stripped-back, guitar-heavy sound as it lets the (rather good) songwriting shine. The two packed bonus discs are worth exploring regardless of your attitude towards the main record, as this was their most prolific period in which they went after dance and club sounds nearly as avidly as the era's better known and less popular vibe - they just left them off for the sake of a cohesive listen. The b-sides collected here have already popped up on singles and Format, but even the most diehard will find plenty of demos and unreleased tracks, which all taken together, complement and contrast the album for a well-deserved complete picture of the era. Interesting to see how just much material they produced around the time that arguably surpasses the final selections, with the added bonus of material recorded for the PopArt collection (including its singles and b-sides).
