Present Tense is the fourth studio album by Wild Beasts, released 24 February 2014 on Domino Recording Company. It was preceded by the single Wanderlust released on the same day. Following a two-year-long world tour in promotion of their third album Smother, the band admitted to feelings of burn out by the experience and in late 2012 announced that they would take a year off from touring to concentrate on writing and recording the follow-up. Longer in creation than any of its predecessors, Hayden Thorpe, Tom Fleming, Chris Talbot and Ben Little took almost a full year away from touring to conc. Present Tense's implosive sound reflects the fact that comedowns and consequences cast a longer shadow over Wild Beasts' songs than they used to. On Mecca, Hayden Thorpe, Tom Flemming, and company spend more time yearning for pleasure than experiencing it. Even on more sensual songs like Wanderlust which is rhymed with voluptuous, Thorpe sounds more jaded than brazen when he sings Don't confuse me with someone who gives a fuck, providing the album's manifesto.
