Present Tense is an album by saxophonist James Carter released on the EmArcy label in 2008. This may be Carter's finest album because of its insistence on the balance between restraint and adventure. In JazzTimes David R. Adler called the album an unselfconscious mix of influences, more three-dimensional than his various tribute discs and the recent organ-trio blowouts. On All About. Present Tense was born out of two very specific desires. First, saxophonist James Carter wanted a precise recorded portrait of where he was at as a musician, aesthetically and technically. Second was producer Michael Cuscuna's dead-on assertion that Carter, for all his instrumental and aesthetic virtuosity, had never been represented well on tape. Carter's inability to resist overdoing it on virtually everything he records ten-minute solos in standards, etc. makes that point inarguable. Cuscuna proves to be the perfect producer - as both ally and foil - and reins Carter in to ben. James Carter - Present Tense 2008. To favorites 1 Download album. Listen album. Mastering a family of reed instruments, from sopranino to contrabass saxophones to contrabass and bass clarinets, James Carter mesmerized the jazz world after arriving in New York City in 1988 to play under the auspices of Lester Bowie. With this 2008 release, saxophonist James Carter backs away from doing his customary concept album to showcase the full spectrum of his talents. Carter is a master of post-bop but he is also a keen student of the pre-swing era, a modern populist and a no-holds barred experimenter. While most of the cuts on Present Tense showcase different sides of Carter, Bro. Dolphy proves the he often brings these varying sides together with surprising ease. James Carter: Present Tense. Multi-reedist James Carter has been steadily chugging along as a master of many instruments and styles since his auspicious recording debut in the early '90s, often operating under the radar while maintaining a consistent commitment to quality performances. With the release of Present Tense, Carter lets us know exactly where he's at with a well-paced collection of lyrical and concise statements, harvesting a deep sense of swing and letting his curious imagination roam free with the assistance of a
