Heavy Weather is the eighth album by Weather Report, released in 1977 through Columbia Records. The release originally sold about 500,000 copies it would prove to be the band's most commercially successful album. Heavy Weather received a 5-star review from Down Beat magazine and went on to be voted jazz album of the year by the readers of that publication. It reached number 30 on the Billboard pop chart, quickly sold nearly half a million copies, and has subsequently gone gold signifying sales of 500,000 copies. In his January 2001 Down Beat retrospective on the band, Josef Woodard said, In 2000, Heavy Weather still sounds like a milestone in the cultural unconscious of jazz history. It is the band's second album with bassist Jaco Pastorius. On Black Market, Pastorius played on two of the seven tracks, but here he is a full member of the band. Featuring the jazz standard Birdland, the album is one of the best-sellers in the Columbia jazz catalog. Heavy Weather is considered a landmark album in the jazz-rock or fusion movement of the 1970s. Its opening track,. While it's not my favorite Weather Report album, Heavy Weather is a true 'fuzak' classic jazz just this side of muzak. I have the older CBS half-speed LP that was quite nice, and I have the 20-bit master on a gold CD that was superior to any other CD versions I've heard. I find Japanese CDs to be a little too trebly for my tastes, but this wonderful mastering by Audio Fidelity has a holographic soundstage I've only heard previously on vinyl.
