Album

The Actual Tigers, originally known as Willis, were an American rock band formed in 1994 in Seattle. They released two full studio albums on CD: a self-titled debut and Gravelled and Green, produced with Dennis Herring. The band opened for Counting Crows after their second studio CD was released and, in 2005 after the Actual Tigers had disbanded, Gravelled and Green was ranked by MSNBC as one of the top 20 albums of the past 20 years. The band played together for seven years, having a sound often. The Actual Tigers watch their own reflection while plucking Americana stylings and indie pop on their debut, Gravelled and Green. It's quite reminiscent of the inquisitive adventures of Simon & Garfunkel, but offers charming soundscapes of early Wilco and the quirky funk of G. Love & Special Sauce. The Actual Tigers are rhythmically tight, offering eclectic instrumentation with a shiny brass section Time and Space and easy acoustics End of May. Their own musical convention is strictly theirs, and the Actual Tigers waltz into something interesting on Gravelled & Green. Gravelled & Green is bright, thoughtful songcraft, sometimes up-beat but never mindlessly happy. Production is excellent. There are several songs on here, On a Roll, Bad Day, Testimony, that should have been big hits. Their sound does reflect a bouncy, summery feel of great Simon tracks like Kodachrome and his Graceland album. Standouts on the album include the opening track, Yardwork in November, and On a Roll.
