It was released in 1957 on Blue Note Records, catalogue BLP 1558. It is noted for the appearance of pianists Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver, both playing on the Monk composition Misterioso. In keeping with the road rubric, the album opens and closes with tracks recorded in Japan about a month after the Beacon concert. A nearly 15-minute up-tempo romp through Irving Berlin's They Say It's Wonderful serves as a rousing overture for the birthday tracks, and offers yet another example of his capacious gift for turning familiar standards into vehicles for enthralling improvisation. Rollins plays the track loose-improvising and recapitulating the melody before announcing an unnamed guest who has got a horn. He then continues his tenor exploration for a few minutes more, before the crowd explodes as altoist and free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman hits the stage. With the exception of the first and last tracks, Road Shows Vol. 2 is a document of Rollin's legendary 80th birthday celebration performance.
