The Complete Schumann Symphonies. Your Rating. Overview . Christoph Eschenbach has recorded two Schumann symphony cycles. The first was with the Bamberg, this is his second set with the NDR from the late 1990s. Those familiar with Eschenbach will find a typical mixture here: a combination of the fairly taut, muscular, and classical, that is frequently interrupted with odd phrasing and tempo choices. Not as unpredictable or egregious as found in some of his earlier recordings such as his Brahms with the Houston Symphony, but dotted with smaller moment by moment surprises. They may not have the iconic, world-beating qualities of that master's symphonic works, but Schumann's more modest essays in the form do feature some of the most transcendent passages in 19th century music. There are four complete symphonies by the Romantic composer Robert Schumann, and one early incomplete symphony from 1832 Eschenbach. Today at 3:10 AM. A little throwback.
