Richard Hawley has always shown a penchant for writing deeply evocative and emotional songs about people and situations in his hometown of Sheffield. His early recordings, especially Lowedges, reflected his obsession with lushly orchestrated pop songs and a production style that extended a song far beyond its margins and into the listener's world with a near visual sensibility. This was even more true on the brilliant, near cinematic recordings Cole's Corner 2005 and Lady's Bridge 2007, where he took production skills and hometown images to a level that almost - but not qui. Truelove's Gutter is the sixth studio album from musician Richard Hawley, released on 21 September 2009 in the UK and on 22 September 2009 in the US. The album title refers to an ancient street in Hawley's native Sheffield, now thought to be the location of present-day Castle Street, which was allegedly named after 18th-century innkeeper Thomas Truelove, who used to charge local people to dump their rubbish in the gutter in the street that then flowed down to the River Don. Richard Hawley has spent his musical career trying to find the romance in the wee, small hours of morning. His deep, sensual voice, the sweeping orchestrations and the pulse-slowing tempos have made him a king of the nocturnal world. Trueloves Gutter is his most sparse album to date. Things nearly erupt in the near-seven minutes of Soldier On , but just as the drums and strings attempt to break past the boiling point, the tune relents and quiet is restored. In Hawleys hushed world, there is an elegant grace to the melodies. Alternatively, Richard Hawley maintains wistful relationships, with women and with the past. He's resigned to let time shuffle by but never quite ready to let the past disappear, which echoes through his songs like a gentle reverb. On Truelove's Gutter, the guitarist and his throwback lyrical style seem to literally fade away, hovering above a more atmospheric backdrop of drawn-out notes, rich reverb, and waves of echo made in part by obscure instruments like the cristal baschet. The gorgeous, backward-looking beauty of past releases like Coles Corner, drawn in part from details of Hawley's life in the Northern English city, has shifted toward something more dark, ambient, and withdrawn.
