The great Lester Young soundalike Paul Quinichette is well-featured on this reissue CD. He is heard on two numbers with a sextet led by trumpeter Gene Roland, playing two other songs with Roland's septet and on eight selections with his own ten-piece group which is filled with players from the world of Count Basie. Best are two numbers Honeysuckle Rose and Pennies from Heaven that feature Quinichette backed by Basie's rhythm section plus pianist Nat Pierce. Paul Quinichette - american jazz tenor-saxophonist, born May 17, 1916 - Denver, Colorado, died May 25, 1983 - New York City Many men tried, but Paul Quinichette was the most successful at emulating the style of Lester Young. Young called him Lady Q , a term not exactly meant at as a compliment. With a nice smoky tone, Quinichette worked with many great musicians, and played on some of the earliest tribute albums. If he is somewhat forgotten today, it may because the tenor style he followed is currently out of favor. That fact does not lessen his music, some of which is remarkable read more. The tracks were recorded on two session dates in November 1954 with two different line-ups, an almost regular jazz sextet with flutist Sam Most as second horn player and two guitarists. The second session featured an Afro-Cuban combo with Herbie Mann on flute and also on tenor saxophone. Kid From Denver. Paul Quinichette Format: Vinyl. New from. Used from. Audio CD, January 29, 2008. Please retry. This is the original title album plus all of Quinichette's participation on another album that was led by Gene Roland. Sadly, at the time of this review there are no sound samples. I lament that because this album showcases Quinichette in both large and smaller ensembles, and he holds his own in both settings. The sound quality of this CD is very good. To my ears it is mixed perfectly and reflects the mid-50s mono technologies used to record this album. Album 2006 12 Songs.
