The Lester Young-Count Basie Sessions - Lester Young, Count Basie. Lester Willis Young August 27, 1909 March 15, 1959, nicknamed Pres or Prez, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and occasional clarinetist. Coming to prominence while a member of Count Basie's orchestra, Young was one of the most influential players on his instrument. In contrast to many of his hard-driving peers, Young played with a relaxed, cool tone and used sophisticated harmonies, using what one critic called a free-floating style, wheeling and diving like a gull, banking with low. And other albums from Lester Young are available on sale at bei so vielen anderen Jazz-Größen ist auch der Ruhm von Lester Young überschattet von seinem traurigen Schicksal. Lester Young was in some ways the definitive jazz musician. He was the personification of the art of swing and a master of creative ballad interpretation. He was one of the early innovators who laid the groundwork for bop and was the principal, as it were, of the cool school. In 2008 Mosaic brought out a four-CD Lester YoungCount Basie set containing 83 selections recorded between 1936 and 1940 which were originally released on 78 rpm Columbia, Okeh and Vocalion phonograph records. This is by no means a complete chronological survey of every studio session that Pres and Basie participated in during the second half of the '30s. And saxophonist Lester Young was the first soloist who showed that it was possible for others to reach the incredible heights achieved by Louis Armstrong in the mid '20s. There are important antecedents in each instance. It's not as if the Basie Orchestra could swing any harder than those led by Fletcher Henderson, Louis Russell or Bennie Moten and Young's incredible architecture couldn't have existed without the foundation laid down by others, especially Coleman Hawkins, who, more than even Armstrong, had created the template for constructing jazz solos.
