Playing the Fool - The Official Live is a live album by British progressive rock band Gentle Giant which was released in 1977. It demonstrates the band's complex musicianship and talent as well as showcasing versions of songs which are often greatly modified from the original album versions. The album contains versions of tracks from all of the band's studio albums to that point except for Acquiring the Taste although a section from the title track of that album is featured in Excerpts from Octopus. This live album originally a double LP but put onto one CD was released in the wake of a single-disc bootleg of the same name taken off of an FM radio concert. The repertory includes lots of stuff off of their early albums, including the never-released-in-the-U. In a Glass House. The sound is very vivid and close, whether the band is rocking to Just the Same or recreating the medieval-style a cappella vocals to On Reflection. In 1977 Gentle Giant came through the USA on one of their many tours in support of the this album. I saw them, and dutifully bought Playing the Fool. Both the show, at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia, and this album are examples of a weird band at their peak. Among Prog live albums, PTF stands at the peak, better in some ways that Yessongs, Welcome Back, USA, Live: Bursting Out, and Seconds out. Only Genesis's little know Genesis Live 1973 stands shoulder to shoulder with this live record of a prog band doing what it did with no apologies and no concessions to anybody. Playing The Fool shows Gentle Giant's unique live performances in a very good and sorted perspective with several instrumental bonuses added to many of the songs too. Gentle Giant always were very engaged live too, something that makes this album very uplifting and very rarely dull. I didn't quite get the point with the addition of Breakdown in Brussels though, but it's still a humoristic break from the album's other tracks, though it remains filler in my ears. This is the Gentle Giant live album to go for and is also a recommended start point to discover the music of this unique prog institution from the 70's.
