It's McCarthy's first solo album and it's produced by Mark Bell. That's definitely in the wheelhouse of most of my friends, but nobody other than myself picked it up upon release. I'll chalk that up to what seems to be pretty lousy marketing on the part of Pylon. Now, that out of the way, y'all missed a great album. McCarthy sounds more human than he ever has on this. I expected this album to be pretty similar to Nitzer Ebb, and was surprised. It's almost nothing like Nitzer Ebb, except that McCarthy sounds as excellent as always. And there is no bad song here. Remarkable LP.

McCarthy sounds more human than he ever has on this. His voice, as usual, sounds great, but he's got more flow and style than he has had since Big Hit (which, regardless of what you thought of it, you gotta agree he sounded excellent on). He's much more expressive, and not just in how he sounds, but what he says. The lyrics are more nuanced than usual, and he's working on some new subjects...even, oh my, some things that aren't angry. There's really no trace of Nitzer Ebb here.

Bell brings his best, too. The production is not cutesy and detail-oriented, as he did with Depeche Mode or Björk. It's big and bouncy, fairly housey. Congas are all over. Chords, both stabby and vibrato. The immensely-catchy "Death is King" even has gospel backing vocals. It's a little retro, a little alternate-universe: almost like FIxmer + McCarthy never happened, showing an alternate path for Doug to move further into techno.

Five stars. Nearly perfect.

EDIT: I just learned this is not Mark Bell of LFO fame, but Mark Bell of Blakkat, who I don't really know. Oh well, doesn't change my main point: great production.
