Cam has broadened the scope of his sound, here where previous releases tended to focus on sonic depth rather than breadth, atmosphere occupying first chair, Substances' sample arrangements are in places almost epic, and the beatwork is far more complex and inventive. Laurent Daumail born 1973, better known by his stage name DJ Cam, is a French record producer. Daumail's music is largely rooted in hip hop, combined with elements of jazz, dub, and ambient and composed using samples. He founded the record label Inflamable. Substances is undoubtably a good album, but it doesn't really match up to DJ Cam's previous release, Underground Vibes Mad Blunted Jazz in the US. The album seems to move at a slower pace than its predecessor, and in terms of genre it leans more towards electronic and jazz rather than hip-hop. I'm also not a big fan of the vocals on Meera and Lost Kingdom - there's something about that style of ethnic singing that I can't really get into.
