Album

The Men Who Make the Music was the first home video released by the American new wave band Devo. Finished in 1979, the film was set to be the first Video LP under the title DevoVision advertised in the inner sleeve of the Duty Now for the Future LP, but was shelved by Time Life due to concerns about its anti-music industry content. It was released in 1981. A DVD of this film was announced in 2000, due to be released by Rhino Records, but this never came to pass. In January 2014, Michael Pilmer. Various Artists. When 1978's Q: Are We Not Men A: We Are Devo made Devo one of the top acts in the new wave field, it was inevitable that the band's live shows would be bootlegged extensively. Countless Devo bootlegs surfaced in the late '70s and early '80s, and they varied considerably in terms of sound quality. Released in late 1979, The Men Who Make the Music is one of Devo's more rewarding bootlegs. The sound quality is generally good, if imperfect, and the live performances are excellent. Although We're All Devo is the band's quintessential homevideo release, The Men Who Make the Music is not far behind, and remains one of the most groundbreaking video releases ever. The film takes place mostly in General Boy's office, where he fills the viewer in on the philosophy behind the theory of De-evolution. Cutaways to Devo members also serve this purpose, allowing Devo, themselves, to explain some of the more minute details. General Boy's speech is interspersed with live footage of Devo in concert, as well as a few music videos. The film ends with footage of Booji Boy performing Red Eye in concert with Devo and a reprise of the Devo Corporate Anthem. Formed by three Detroit siblings six years before the Sex Pistols stormed the airwaves with God Save the Queen, Death's blisteringly aggressive music was initially dismissed by record labels more interested in cashing-in on the glitzy disco craze. The Men Who Make the Music combines concert footage from DEVO's 1978 tour with music videos and interstitials featuring a vague story about DEVO's rocky relationship with Big Entertainment.
