Live At The Village Vanguard Again is a live jazz album by saxophonist John Coltrane. Recorded in May 1966 during a live performance at the Village Vanguard jazz club in New York City, the album features Coltrane playing in the free jazz style that characterized his final years. This release features three pieces: Naima, My Favorite Things, and a bass solo by Jimmy Garrison entitled, Introduction to My Favorite Things. Coltrane's signature ballad Naima opens the album and goes on for over 15 minutes. One of the most iconic tunes in his repertoire, the treatment it is given here is radical. While the melody is referenced in the beginning, Coltrane moves it aside fairly quickly to concentrate on improvisation. Coltrane's 1961 Village Vanguard engagement is legendary - both for the quality of the music and for the controversy it generated at the time. This reissue contains the Live at the Village Vanguard album, nothing more, nothing less, and to my mind offers a very poor value for most listeners. There is another release - the Village Vanguard Master Takes - that offers the 3 tracks here, plus two others India and Impressions. John Coltrane may have made more stirring albums than Live at the Village Vangaurd, but he never made a more important one. It is not his playing, or his new band's, which did far better work later.
