Clifford Hayes was 17 when asked to play violin with the group including banjo and guitar and was the FIRST JUG BAND TO RECORD 1924 as the accompaniment to vaudeville trained blues star, Sara Martin, also from Louisville. Shortly thereafter the band with various players and under several names recorded on their own with OKeh and later Victor and Vocalion. This was almost two years before the better known Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers of Memphis began to record. The legendary OKeh Race Records division A&R man, Ralph Peer paired Martin with the McDonaldHayes group for recording.
