During that encounter, McLaughlin introduced Santana to his guru. To paraphrase from Walter Koloskys 2002 review of the album, McLaughlin persuaded Clive Davis to let the collaboration happen. Incidentally, the personnel of Mahavishnu Orchestra save for Jerry Goodman and Rick Laird and Santana came together at California to craft the album we know today.
