To hear this recording in the context of not only Carlos Santana's development as a guitarist, but as the logical extension of the music of John Coltrane and Miles Davis influencing rock musicians - McLaughlin, of course, was a former Davis sideman - this extension makes perfect sense in the post-Sonic Youth, post-rock era. According to Paul Stumps McLaughlin biography Go Ahead John , John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana met together in 1971. During that encounter, McLaughlin introduced Santana to his guru. To paraphrase from Walter Koloskys 2002 review of the album, McLaughlin persuaded Clive Davis to let the collaboration happen. Incidentally, the personnel of Mahavishnu Orchestra save for Jerry Goodman and Rick Laird and Santana came together at California to craft the album we know today. Neither the featuring guitarists sang on this album, leaving chanting vocal duties to Cuban percussionist Armando Peraz. Love Devotion Surrender is, unsurprisingly, a maelstrom of guitar work. Both leaders bring parts of their respective bands to the sessions, unleashing a powerful set of songs that are either Coltrane interpretations Niama and Pt 1: Acknowledgement, retitled A Love Supreme here or attempts to incorporate some of his approach to music. The combination of Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, together with members of both men's respective bands, producing an album revisiting the music of John Coltrane proves to be less than the sum of its parts
