Shape Shift sounds closer to a live album than anything else that precedes it in the Zombi discography, capturing the essence of their performances rather than relying on studio trickery. The album doesn't have as much of an overt horror soundtrack influence as some of their prior albums, recalling the more Rush-inspired sound of releases like 2006's Surface to Air. And even if the album isn't as explicitly disco-influenced as Escape Velocity, it's hard to deny that there's a steady groove to tracks like Mission Creep, which has a funky bassline while still. Indeed, Zombi's third album, 2009's Spirit Animal, combined the stately gesturing of Genesis' 1974 prog epic The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with the ominous intonation of film music. Somehow, Moore and Paterra managed to evoke the murky synthesizer ambience of the 1970s while also infusing their music with a decidedly modern aura. After the lengthy break that followed the bands beloved last album Escape Velocity, 2015 sees Zombi ready to reclaim their rightful role as space-rock overlords with their sixth full-length Shape Shift. Darker, heavier and more dynamic than their more recent works, Shape Shift sees the duo in live band mode, a fitting return to their roots after their successful North American tour with the legendary Goblin in 2013 and a triumphant headlining appearance at the prestigious Roadburn Festival in April, 2015
