Album

There are many times when Lateef is obviously the more listenable of the two, and then there are times when, upon closer listening, you hear the uniqueness of what Freeman is laying down. The ever brilliant pianist John Young adds mightily to the session, while bassist John Whitfield and drummer Terry Morrissette seem to stand back and listen as the sounds unfurl. Listen, Buy. On The Centaur And The Phoenix, Lateef continued to explore music from the East, but also dips into the European classical tradition with the angular, Stravinsky-esque title track and the sublimely lyrical Summer Song. Lateefs best known album has merits but also shortcomings and while Eastern Sounds includes some beautiful tunes, Lateefs arrangements often seem to play safe. The clue is in the name of the label. Moodsville was launched by Prestige boss Bob Weinstock as a subsidiary label dealing in mood music , a genre which makes exotica sound like P-Funk. Artist images. Lateef first began recording as a leader in 1957 for Savoy Records working with musicians such as Wilbur Harden, a non-exclusive association which continued until 1959 the earliest of Lateef's album's for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz overlap with them. By 1961, with the recording of Into Something, Lateef's dominant presence within a group context had emerged. His Eastern influences are clearly audible in all of these recordings while they remain within the bounds of approach. Yusef Lateef's Morning Lateef from his album Jazz Mood.
