A prominent figure in post-WWII European Jazz, Mengelberg is known for his forays into free improvisation, for bringing humor into his music, and as a leading interpreter of songs by fellow pianists Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols. Mengelberg was born in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR, the son of the Dutch conductor Karel Mengelberg born Karel Willem Joseph Mengelberg 18 July 1902, Utrecht 11 July 1984, Amsterdam and. Yuri Honing has won a prestigious Edison Jazz Award 2018 which will be handed out to him in LantarenVenster in Rotterdam on July 6th 2018 for his album 'Goldbrun' together with his Acoustic Quartet. As a follow-up of the album he has set up a presentation in one of the museum halls of Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle together with Mariecke van der Linden. The album Playing 1998 included Honing performing alongside pianist Misha Mengelberg in twelve freely improvised tracks. Two years later the project received a sequel at the North Sea Jazz Festival, with cellist Ernst Reijseger as third improviser. The recordings find their way onto the CD Lively 2000. In 2001, Honing met Paul Bley and recorded the album Seven with Bley on piano, Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums. This album garnered Honing the Dutch Edison Award in 2002
