Drawing equally from Motown and the MC5, Detroit's Was Not Was were big in the Eighties, before Don Was's role as a superstar producer put the band on the backburner. This first new album for nearly 20 years takes up where they left off, full of smooth funk and satirical lyrics, with great soul vocals by Sweet Pea Atkinson and Sir Harry Bowens. Whether intentionally or not, it sounds Eighties too: a sonic equivalent to big hair and shoulder pads. The substantial weirdness quotient includes Kris Kristofferson intoning moodily on Green Pills in the Dresser to the backing. Their song catalog features an eclectic mix of pop and rock styles, often featuring guest musicians from across the musical spectrum. The band's most popular period was during the 1980s and early 1990s, with their highest charting hit, the song Walk the Dinosaur, released in 1987 as the lead single from their 1988 album What Up, Dog. Closing in on 20 years since their last album, the whole gang is here, pretty much - the core of Don and David Was and Sir Harry Bowens and Sweet Pea Atkinson, along with Was Not Was vets Luis Resto, David McMurray, Wayne Kramer, Donald Ray Mitchell, and Randy Jacobs, as well as roughly a couple dozen additional accomplices, from Booker T. Jones to of course Kris Kristofferson. Album 2008 11 Songs. More By Was Not Was. What Up, Dog 1987. The Best of Was Not Was 1980-2010. Born to Laugh at Tornados.
