In 1952 he founded the Ensemble Baroque de Paris, featuring Rampal himself, Veyron-Lacroix, Pierlot, Hongne, and violinist Robert Gendre. Remaining together over almost three decades, the ensemble proved one of the first musical groups to bring to light the chamber repertoire of the 18th century. Jean-Pierre Rampal was a pioneer of Vivaldis works for flute in fact, you wont find more of a pioneer of Vivaldis works for flute than Rampal, since this was the very first recording of the Opus 10 cycle. Heard today, when so much has happened in the interpretation of Vivaldi in the last 25 years, even Rampal in 1966 and 1985 sounds, stylistically, terribly passé, with tempos that are often plodding, character thats elegant and aristocratic but lacks dynamism, verve, sparkle, drama, and orchestral accompaniments that sound too thick, when not downright lachrymose.
