Album

Hallowed Ground is the second album by Violent Femmes, released in June 1984. Like the band's first album, the songs were mostly written by singerguitaristlyricist Gordon Gano when he was in high school. Country Death Song, for example, written by Gano during his high school classes, was inspired by the tradition of folk songs about terrible, horrific stories. A departure from the straightforward rock style of their debut, Hallowed Ground was considerably divisive amongst fans and critics, with. 1 - Country Death Song 2 - I Hear the Rain 3 - Never Tell 4 - Jesus Walking on the Water 5 - I Know It's True But I'm Sorry to Say 6 - Hallowed Ground Ground - Violent Femmes. Similar to the first album, all of the songs were written by lead singer, Gordon Gano, while still in high school. This second album, however, pushed the band in new directions and made sure they did not rest on their laurels featuring singles Country Death Song and the Lou Reed inspired Sweet Misery Blues, as well as a guest appearance from saxophonist John Zorn. The other two members of Violent Femmes were atheists, and initially refused to perform those songs, but after their debut had been recorded, they relented and several of Gano's religion-themed songs were recorded for Hallowed Ground. 1 Track listing.
