Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ née Welch 20 March 1917 18 June 2020 was an English singer, songwriter and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during the Second World War. She was widely referred to as the Forces' Sweetheart and gave outdoor concerts for the troops in Egypt, India and Burma during the war as part of Entertainments National Service Association ENSA. The songs most associated with her are We'll Meet Again, There'll Be Bluebirds Over. The second compilation, Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart: 25 Original Mono Recordings 1936-1952, was originally released in chronological order except for A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square, which was given the status of lead track. That compilation is presented here in exactly the same order as CD 2 here. Yet although the song isn't one of Vera Lynn's most famous recordings, she recorded it on 10th March 1937 and may well have been the first singer to record the song. Vera's version is brilliant, but Frances Langford's version with a Hawaiian feel is my favorite version. Dame Vera Lynn, the Forces' Sweetheart whose songs helped raise morale in World War Two, has died aged 103. The singer was best known for performing hits such as We'll Meet Again to troops on the front line in countries including India and Egypt. A week later, she became the oldest artist to get a top 40 album in the UK, beating her own record when her greatest hits album re-entered the charts at number 30. Vera Lynn sang the songs that resonated emotionally with people who were separated from their loved ones and she sang them directly to you. It was warm, intimate, heartfelt and personal, and that's why Vera Lynn became the Forces' Sweetheart. The Original Mono Recordings is comprised of Bob Dylan's first eight long-playing albums, painstakingly reproduced from their first generation monaural mixes as the artist intended them to be heard: one channel of powerful sound, both direct and immediate. While stereo recordings had been available as early as the mid-1950s, mono was still the predominant-and often preferred-mode of recording and mixing by the top artists of the 1960s. Each disc in the set comes in its own individual jacket which faithfully replicates the original album artwork, complete with labels and stickers that were found on the original 1960s releases.
