Under the direction of Timothy Brown, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge, sings with energy, enthusiasm, and even occasional excitement, and its diction and articulation are excellent. Despite these virtues, however, this Naxos disc is largely disappointing. For one thing, the choir sounds like it numbers in the hundreds. The paradox that is Ralph Vaughan Williams the agnostic and Vaughan Williams the composer of some of the finest sacred music of the 20th century is striking. This new recording by the always excellent Choir of Clare College, Cambridge is also striking. It features a good cross-section of familiar works-the Mass in G minor-and a hearty sampling of lesser-known works. The Concerto in A minor for Oboe and Strings was written by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 194344 for the oboist Léon Goossens, to whom the score is dedicated. Amongst other things, the concerto began as a revision of a scherzo movement originally intended for the symphony Heffer 2000, 106.
