For a while in the early 1970s, non-chart songs were played on a more regular basis, to reflect the perceived growing importance of album sales there was an album slot featuring three songs from a new LP, as well as a New Release spot and a feature of a new act, dubbed Tip for the Top. The first show, due to be screened on 21 December, was not shown at all because BBC1 was off the air. all middle-aged, often struggled with the enormous range of rock and pop. The Four Tops are a vocal quartet from Detroit, Michigan, USA, who helped to define the city's Motown sound of the. In the 1980s, the Four Tops recorded for Casablanca Records, Arista Records and Motown, returning to that label on two occasions for brief stays. Apart from their were numerous similar album series in existence in the 1970s, put out by other labels. These include 12 Tops on the Stereo Gold Award record label, Hot Hits on the Music for Pleasure label, 16 Chart Hits on the Contour label, and Parade of Pops on the Windmill label and, later, the Chevron label, plus several others. Some of these were also commercially successful. Offshoot releases. Pickwick also assembled tracks from Top of the Pops for several other spin-off album projects, including collections themed by particular artists such as Top of the Poppers Sing & Play the Beatles' Golden Hits and a series marketed at children, under the name Top of the Tots.
