As in other countries, the musical production in Tanzania is constantly undergoing changes. Music listened to by Tanzanians today stretches from traditional African music or the string-based taarab to a distinctive hip hop known as bongo flava. The Tanzanian national anthem is Mungu Ibariki Africa God Bless Africa, composed by South African composer Enoch Sontonga in 1897. The tune is the ANC's official song and later became the national anthem of South Africa. The melody is also the national anthem. Part of the never-ending World Music Library from King Records, this compilation of Tanzanian music is surprisingly well put together as opposed to some others in the series. Multiple song forms are represented, from a collection of children's songs to instrumental virtuosity on three forms of the marimba, native stringed instruments, and vocals. Music of Tanzania is a spectacular collection of field recordings gathered by Laurent Jeanneau between December 1999 and March 2000. This debut volume of Sublime Frequencies' exploration of indigenous Tanzanian music compiles sacred and profane songs and dances of the Hadza, Datoga, and Makonde people. Highlights include stoned ecstatic dancing in a Hadza encampment a drunken celebration of preteen sexual initiation from a Makonde fishing village baboon imitations performed on the malimba electrified Islamic trance percussion and useful tips for amateur hyrax hunters.
