Merengue: Dominican Music & Identity is a mate to ethnomusicologist Paul Austerlitz' book of the same title Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1996. The CD is as varied in style as quality. Providing a fascinating look at the music of Dominica Latin jazz, proto-Cajun, semi-Calypso, etc. it is also challenging. Some tracks have the poor quality of a field recording. This is more than made up by the bulk of the tracks, which are hopping Also, the liner notes are extensive in their description of the music in general, instrumentology and notes on each track. Merengue - the infectiously hot dance music from the Dominican Republic - has recently taken Latino nightclubs by storm.
