Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 album musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, on which the 1971 rock opera musical of the same name was based. The album musical is a musical dramatisation of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. It was originally banned by the BBC on grounds of being sacrilegious. By 1983, the album had sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Originally conceived as a double-album project by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber back in the days of vinyl albums, the original version was a huge success, leading to stage shows and eventually this, the original motion picture soundtrack version of Webber's original score. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. I love the movie soundtrack, and have always preferred it over the original studio production. However, the audio quality on this CD is very poor. I'm constantly turning the volume up or down, as the songs seem to be either too quiet or too loud. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is one of those albums that holds its own as the original rock opera album, film or soundtrack haven't seen the play but hear it's good too. Well, i love the original 1970 rock opera but the 1973 film soundtrack does have its own special characteristics that make it an essential supplement to your JC SUPERSTAR experience despite not equalling the overall impact of the first release. First of all, the production of this release is a lot better and a whole bunch of new tracks were included to make this one a more exhaustive depiction of the story.
