The album went on to sell over 750,000 copies that year and the band toured with artists like Elvis Costello, Matchbox Twenty, Sum 41, and Bon Jovi and was followed by a worldwide tour. A concept album based around a mans psychological breakdown, The Downward Spiral is an aggressive and abrasive record that tackles all manner of transgressive subject matter self-harm, drug addiction, alcoholism, suicide while sounding appropriately discomforting. Jazz-rock may conjure up nightmares of Kenny G soullessly noodling his sax, but their songs cynical, acerbic lyrics have always elevated the Dan to something more than the sum of their parts.
