℗ 1991 Sub Pop
The Grunge Years is a compilation album of songs by notable grunge bands released by Sub Pop in 1991. As indicated by the cover of the album, it was limited to a pressing of 500,000 copies. Dive - Nirvana. Shove - L7. Stumblin' Man - Tad. Red Head Walking - Beat Happening. Ugly Sunday - Mark Lanegan. Change Has Come - Screaming Trees. Tomorrow - Fluid. Retarded - Afghan Whigs. House - Babes in Toyland. Come to Mind - Mudhoney. Long Black Veil - The Walkabouts. Although citations could be found describing each of these as grunge, in some cases the designation would be controversial, particularly for those bands that are considered Post-grunge. This 13-track, sardonically packaged complete with suited, briefcase-toting executive types on the front cover set compiles material from Sub Pop's late-'80searly-'90s period, when the company had just been tagged and saddled with the grunge label. Much of it was originally released on vinyl 45s, and some has subsequently resurfaced on CD indeed, only dedicated collectors could probably tell you which of these tracks are truly rare by now. The Grunge Years was a compilation album of songs by notable grunge bands released by Sub Pop and distributed by Caroline Records in 1991. As indicated Grunge Years - Street Tease. This album features the heavy metal song Stumbling Man by Tad, with Soundgarden-like riffs and deep vocals. It also features punkish House with Babes in Toyland where Courtney Love does some superb angry vocals. Most of the rest of the songs are rather grungy, most are really good. I recommend this album for any fan of Nirvana not yet familar with the rest of the Seattle scene, as it contains some very good examples of grunge songs, and some good reasons to check these bands out further.
