Various Artists. Great Voices of Constantinople: 1927-1933. Rare popular 78s recorded in Athens and Constantinople in the late '20s and early '30s, most of the 23 tracks attributed to Andonios Dalgas who recorded in Athens and sang in Greek or Hafiz Burhan who recorded in Constantinople and sang in Turkish. The title is a bit misleading it's a combination of vintage Greek and Turkish music, not solely Turkish as you might assume, although Dalgas was born in Constantinople. Great Voices of Constantinople takes a pointcounterpoint angle in its showcase of two vernacular music greats, Andonios Dhiamandidhis, or Dalgas, and Hafiz Burhan Sesyilmaz. Dalgas, a Greek, specialized in the amane, an unmetered song consisting of single couplets, while the Turkish Burhan was more a Cantor, but also tackled the amane. Dalgas alone cut over 400 sides for the Greek HMV catalog between 1926 and 1933, and Burhan's numerous Columbia 78s are a testimony to his fame at the time. Sample this album Artist - Artist Sample.
