Footwork is a utilitarian music, and although the tracks here have around the same tempo, different producers have singular styles. In reflection to the dancing it inspires, the rough, aggressive exterior of the music, with its dark themes and terms of combat, gives way to an incredible gracefulness at times, often combining intricate double-time abstracted drums with lush textures and choppy abstract sounds and a distinct way of salvaging popular music past and present and putting it to good use by cutting. Bangs & Works, Vol. 1 is the first widely available compilation of footwork music, released by London-based Planet Mu, whose founder, Mike Paradinas, is relentless in his quest for new sounds. There is little question why footwork evolved in Chicago: House music birthed the raunchier, uptempo ghetto house or juke, which in turn led to the stripped-for-parts footwork sound. Chicago-based journalist and DJ Dave Quam called footwork more or less the gum under the shoe of mainstream electronic music, which is a fantastic visual that also speaks to the tuff pliability of the sound. Footwork is not expansive. For a Chicago-born style thats spearheaded by young clubgoers and spread by the Internet, footwork is surprisingly abstract, combining the minimalism and fast beats per minute of ghetto-tech with the traditional boom of bass music. Top this off with tightly cut samples that feature either strange vocal lines or off-kilter melodies and youve got footwork, a genre that both DJ Assault and Throbbing Gristle can agree on.
