Surf rock reached its peak in 1963-65, then gradually gave way to bands influenced by the counterculture movement. While hard rock had disappeared from the US charts in the early '60s, it never died out in Europe and Britain in particular was a hotbed of rock-and-roll activity during this time. In late 1963, the Beatles embarked on their first US tour. A few months later, rock-and-roll founding father Chuck Berry emerged from a 2-12 year prison stint and resumed recording and touring.
