Far From Home, released in 1994, is the eighth and final studio album by the rock band Traffic, and the first in two decades since the release of When the Eagle Flies in 1974. It was recorded at a large house called Woodstock, outside Kilcoole to the south of Dublin, and mixed at the Chateau Miraval in Correns, southern France. The album reached number 29 in the UK Albums Chart, where it remained for four weeks, making it by far Traffic's most commercially successful album in their home country since. But the question of whether Winwood and Capaldi could validly constitute Traffic by themselves was not addressed until 1994, 20 years after the group disbanded, when the two surprisingly announced they would be recording and touring under their old band name. The album they made together sounded for the most part like a Winwood solo album. A car full of Irish nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them. Hey, show us yer tits, ya penguins shouts one of the drunks. Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, I don't think they know who we are show them your cross. A taxi driver, a young girl and a backpacker simultaneously experience a wonderful journey in Tokyo, where they find connections to their own homes in Africa, Europe and Southeast their journey, they run into the same Japanese woman named Akiko. Meanwhile, a writer in Paris recalls her encounter with Akiko in Tokyo. Far From Home is sort of a Steve Winwood album with the ghost of Traffic. Not really a true traffic album in the spirit of those before their breakup 20 years before. But could it be with Chris Wood gone and just Winwood and Capaldi left from the original lineup. I do like this album a lot, but I think Far From Home is more truly a Winwood solo album with Capaldi's rhythms driving most of the Traffic feeling in here. Overall about 70 Winwood solo feel and 30 Traffic feel. Like the ghost or a shadow up Traffic is cast upon what would otherwise be another Winwood solo album. This last Traffic album finds Steve Winwood in fine vocal form, as well as his usual guitar and keyboard mastery. Varied and always interesting with several standout tracks. I think I'd have liked a bit more Chris Wood in the mix to make it a bit more Traffic and less Steve Winwood solo, but it's still a way from his blue eyed soul period. Best-selling in CDs
