Join the Dots is the second studio album by British psychedelic rock band TOY, released on 9 December 2013 in Europe and the UK 17 December, USA through Heavenly Recordings. The band recorded the album with Dan Carey, who also produced their debut album, and it took twice as long as their first album to record and master. The first single to be released from the album was Join the Dots, released in October, 2013, as a download and limited hand-stamped seven-inch vinyl. Join the Dots. That isn't the case on Join the Dots, which finds them bridging the gaps that made their first album as unfocused as it was promising. Reunited with producer Dan Carey, the band blends the best of each approach they tried on TOY. They give their pop songs some of the drive of their ambitious instrumentals on songs like the former single Endlessly and You Won't Be the Same, which nods to '60s and '80s psych pop with its jangly guitars and hazy keyboards. Following relatively swiftly on the heels of their 2012 self-titled debut, Join the Dots continues to make many of the right noises that attracted critical approval from its predecessor. Why is it, then, that the overall effect doesnt quite feel like it comes off in the same way So opener Conductor starts out with a cosmic ripple and a psychedelic sense of wonderment that augers well for whats to follow. The wholly instrumental track is compelling and driven by the motoric rhythms that also propel many of the other better tracks here. All good so far
