As you might presume, Immaterial takes patience. The album moves along at a snail's pace, composed of glitch-like sounds and field recordings beats occasionally enter the mix dub basslines in particular, but for the most part this is an ambient album much in the vein of Vladislav Delay's self-authored work and other similar ambient dub-techno producers affiliated with the Chain Reaction label, Monolake. being perhaps the most obvious comparison. Tomas Jirku's Immaterial looks to the near imperceptible for inspiration. Though not widely recognized, Jirku's recording career has neatly suggested that he would soon release a genre-defining set. Having worked out his M. on the MP3 site NoType, Jirku released his sophomore album, last year's Variants, for Alien 8. That album collected a month's worth of clicks, pop, and righteous dub rhythms. The step from the suggestive Variants to the blatant club styles of his next release, Sequins, was a easy one. Since then, a decade and a half of producing has seen Jirku manipulate house on Arbutus Records hip-hop with his laser-gun-rap project The Killaz dub on his highly regarded Entropy album electro, ambient, and other experiments that defy genres. With experience performing around the globe and having made his mark on innumerable record labels, Tomas has been honing back in on techno, aiming to maximize the brain and body connection that deep techno can provide.
