The band is actually the project of former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison, and on Mit Gas, the band's second album, he drops his prior fight for melodic lead, letting Patton growl, sustain, babble, stutter, croon, and yowl through each precision-stopped, layered track. Maybe all those nights of getting booed off the stage while touring with Tool after the 2001 self-titled release taught them a thing or two about indulging star power. However, in Mit Gas, it's undebiable that Pattons influence has grown significantly since Tomahawks self titled debut. This is one of the best rock albums I've ever heard, because of the great variety in the songs. The difference between Tomahawk and Pattons hit band Faith No More is that Tomahawk has more of a signature sound, while Faith No More sounded pretty much like a different band each album. 02 Rape This Day Rape This Day is more punk influenced than the other songs on Mit Gas. Hard Rock I'm not usually susceptible to press release anti-hyperbole like Mit Gas finds Tomahawk more comfortable working together as a proper group, I'll be damned if there isn't something to that little bit of PR wisdom that accompanies Tomahawk's second full-length. For one, Patton's keyboards play an inextricable role within the band this time out, allowing the group to straddle the distance between ambience and onslaught even more remarkably than on its first record.
