Those Poor Bastards release their concept album, "Behold The Abyss," along with the companion books available on their website. The album follows the exploits of a vile and twisted man by the name of Edgar Switchblade. Those familiar with TPB will hear a familiar sound that doesn't depart much from their previous work. You should expect themes of despair, murder, and perverted holiness.

Lonesome Wyatt brings his wretched growl and lonely moan backed by The Minister on a variety of odd instruments including an organ. The tracks loosely follow the events of the first book, "The Terrible Tale of Edgar Switchblade," drenched in gruesome themes of the cannibal and his horse, Old Red.

Onto the tracks.

The opening track sets the theme and tone for the rest of the album. More story than song, "The Beginning," introduces Edgar Switchblade (pictured on the album cover) and his demeanor. Listen for the unfriendly growl of Lonesome Wyatt as he stumbles from track to track with his terrible tenor. Of note is the fifth tracks, "My Beautiful Knife," in which Wyatt moans in agony and harmonizes with himself through the lens of Edgar Switchblade as he admires the glory of his gorgeous knife and the ease with which it kills.

Fans of country, doom metal, and folk music in the vane of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits will find a pleasant barrage of gloomy tracks punctuated by the musings of a fictional villain with a perverted and twisted view of the world.

Give it a listen. If you're new to Those Poor Bastards but like what you hear, I suggest following up this album with their album "Inhuman Nature."
