The Kids Are Alright is a soundtrack album by the British rock band The Who, as a companion to the band's documentary film of the same name. As compilation album, it serves as a retrospective look at the band's biggest hits throughout their career to the point it was released. Most of the tracks are live recordings, rather than the original studio versions. The Kids Are Alright is a song written by Pete Townshend of the Who. It appears as the seventh track on The Who's debut album My Generation 1965. A similar song, titled It's Alright, was recorded by the Rockin' Vickers and released as a single in March 1966. The Kids Are Alright was not released as a single until more than six months after it first appeared on the LP, first in the United States, and in the United Kingdom the following month. Music video by The Who performing The Kids Are , the listener who fires up this album on CD, or via download, gets to hear some great music, but misses out on the accompanying visuals. But if being deprived of the film footage doesn't bother you, then you can enjoy hearing some great music from throughout The Who's career, in alternate takes that are slightly, and refreshingly, different from the more familiar versions that we all know so well. The actual song The Kids Are Alright may be the most obvious omission. It's more stream of consciousness than greatest hits. Even so, all major bases are covered. Like the film itself, the soundtrack to the Who's Kids Are Alright documentary is frustrating even as it pleases, since it falls short of being definitive. If the film was supposed to explain the excitement and history of the Who, tracing their evolution from mod superstars to arena rock gods, it somehow failed by just not quite gelling.
