They were the second band to receive national airplay with a surf instrumental, after The Marketts, with their song Bustin' Surfboards, released on Aertaun Records in 1962. Bustin' Surfboards has since become a classic and mainstay of the surf genre. One of its distinctions, and appeals, was that the song opened with the sound of an ocean swell that continued throughout the song, thereby creating a sense of being at a beach. One of the saddest stories in rock & roll history surrounds the Tornados, an instrumental group from Britain. Although there were other groups with the same name see listing for their American surf-band counterparts, this batch of Tornados were the creation of British producer Joe Meek. Meek was England's first independent producer, being equal parts Thomas Edison, Phil Spector, and Ed Wood. An inveterate tinkerer, he designed his own compression units and microphone pre-amps, giving his productions their own distinct sound. Fifty-five Tornados tracks on two CDs may be 53 more than most casual listeners need, but this double-disc set justifies itself in the listening. To most Americans, and even most Britons, the Tornados were one-hit wonders, responsible for Telstar and not much else, but as this set shows, they did come up with some cool sounds and tunes under the guidance of producermanager Joe Meek. Telstar is a 1962 instrumental written and produced by Joe Meek for the English band the Tornados. The track reached number 1 on the U. Billboard Hot 100 in December 1962 the second British recording to reach number 1 on that chart in the year, after Stranger on the Shore in May, and was also a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart. It was the second instrumental single to hit number 1 in 1962 on both the US and UK weekly charts. THE TORNADOS Telstar Pop Group Original 1960's Colour Photo Card Condition: Like New.
