Starman was a British pop band formed in 2009 by Andrew Stone, a dance teacher at London-based Pineapple Dance Studios. The band line-up initially consisted of Andrew Stone, Jesus Ruiz, Craig Custance, Mickey Cowdroy, Rosalee O'Connell and Luka Cadez. Starman described their music as a high-energy mix of pop and 1980s electro, with a broad range of beats, melodies and riffs. They performed several gigs across the UK in summer 2010, including T4 on the Beach and Party in the Park. The German group, Splash Band, pay homage to director and composer, John Carpenter. Their tracks is basically the main titles to most of Carpenter's early film work Dark Star, Assault On Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog ec from The Splash Band 1985 12''. Ralf Hennings’ Splash Band project produced a lot of movie cover versions during the mid eighties, the best known being “The End” from the influential “Assault on Precinct 13” soundtrack. Most of the Splash Band records are good but this one is really something else.

“Starman” takes the intense romantic theme from John Carpenter’s movie and turns it into an epic synth-disco hit.
As usual trying to describe the elements of the music in words can’t do it justice, but suffice to say this record has one of my favourite drum sounds, really cavernous and heavy, also the eerie melody that plays during the long break sounds from another world, quite unlike anything I’ve heard before, truly unique.

I can’t say this record is for everyone, as some listeners with “better” or perhaps more sophisticated music taste will no doubt find it cheesy or gauche, but for my tastes it’s one of the best records of the eighties and a personal favourite.
