The Specials is the debut album by British ska revival band The Specials. Released on 19 October 1979 on Jerry Dammers' 2 Tone label, the album is seen by some as the defining moment in the UK ska scene. Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the disaffection and anger felt by the youth of the UK's concrete jungle-a phrase borrowed from Bob Marley's 1973 album Catch a Fire but equally appropriately used here to describe the grim, violent inner cities of 1970s Britain. The Specials and Co. Cleopatra's The Specials and Co contains a hodgepodge of outtakes, re-recordings, and live versions of the Specials' greatest hits, all performed by various incarnations of the seminal ska revival band. There are a few good moments here, to be sure, but only hardcore fans will bother finding what those moments are - and chances are, they'll want those recordings in a more coherent collection than this. The Specials. 40 years on from it's release Steve looks back at The Specials debut album. Produced by Elvis Costello, the album captures the disaffection and anger felt by the youth of the UK's concrete jungle-a phrase borrowed from Bob Marley's 1972 album Catch a Fire but equally apposite here to describe the grim, violent inner cities of 1970s Britain. It has gone on to be one of the defining albums of the era, perfectly snap shotting how politically and socially tense it was in the UK at that time. Show less. 1 hour. The Specials, also known as The Special AKA, are an English 2 Tone and ska revival band formed in 1977 in Coventry. Their music combines a danceable ska and rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude. Lyrically, they present a more focused and informed political and social stance. Changing their name to the Specials, they recorded their eponymous debut album in 1979, produced by Elvis Costello. Horn players Dick Cuthell and Rico Rodriguez were featured on the album, but would not be official members of the Specials until their second album. The penultimate song on More Specials followed by a mirthless death-crawl reprise of music hall standard Enjoy Yourself, which opened the album International Jetset made explicit the mindset within the group in 1980. A queasy groove eked out on piquant sitar, neon synths and wailing backing vocals that sound more than a little like howls of agony, the track found Hall narrating his nervous breakdown on a DC-10, as he gives voice to Dammers disdain for the pop success hes happened upon Ive seen the carpets on the walls of hotel rooms around
