A Date with the Smithereens is the fifth album by the New Jersey rock band The Smithereens, released in 1994. It is seen as a stylistically consistent with the melodic pop sensibilities of their earliest albums, along with the more rock-driven sound and production of their most commercially successful releases. Producer Butch Vig left the project prior to the recording of the album, which may have inspired some of the bitterness expressed in this album. The Smithereens released Blow Up, their bid for crossover radio play, in September 1991, just two weeks before Nevermind appeared in stores. Once grunge broke through, the Smithereens were effectively edged out of the college radio market, and it wasn't long before mainstream radio turned their back as well. There was no place to go except back to their roots. Again hiring Don Dixon as producer, the Smithereens made A Date with the Smithereens - a classic Smithereens album in the vein of Especially for You but with the sound of 11. The problem is, Pat DiNizio hit a songwriting dry spell,. Listen free to The Smithereens A Date With The Smithereens War for My Mind, Everything I Have Is Blue and more. 12 tracks 48:19. This alternative power pop album slipped under most people's radar and didn't get very good reviews, yet "Miles from Nowhere" and "Point of No Return" both should've been contenders to reach the Top 10 in the modern rock/college radio charts. They're strong pop songs with great harmonies, every bit as good as "Only a Memory" musically. Pat DiNizio's vocal style is no worse than any other '90s rocker's, although there may be a case for claiming that his relatively straightforward style was becoming a little dated, too tied to the late '80s/early '90s alternative rock scene. My guess, though, is that the album's failure is mainly just in the lyrics, which at times are just too juvenile for the band's otherwise somewhat "serious" sound. Nevertheless, having come of age in this era, I enjoy the sound of tracks 1, 2, 3, and 5 well enough to put them in my shuffle-play rotation, and I also kept the ridiculously indulgent tracks 6 & 9 as guilty pleasures.
