They were resident at the Savoy Hotel, London, between 1923 and 1927. The band was formed by Debroy Somers, an ex-army bandmaster, in 1923. Both the Orpheans and the Savoy Havana Band were under the management of Wilfred de Mornys. The Orpheans were later led by the violinist Cyril Ramon Newton, and by the pianist Carroll Gibbons. This was their first ever issued side, released under the pseudonym The Albany Dance Orchestra. The Savoy Havana Band , The Savoy Orpheans and the 'brassless' support, The Sylvians. However, in many cases, the Sylvians recorded or performed with personnel from the former to augment their sound. Howard Jacobs, who replaced saxophonist Rudy Vallee, then directed the Orpheans between late 1931 and mid 1932, followed by Carroll Gibbons until 1955. This is the third album of the Savoy Hotel Orpheans. The first disc includes the Savoy Havana Band directed by Bert Ralton, and the Savoy Orpheans as directed by Debroy Somers and recordings he made under his own name.
