The album contains 14 of the tongue-in-cheek pastiches of Beatles songs that were featured in the film. The primary creative force of the Rutles' music was Neil Innes, the sole composer and arranger of the songs. Innes had been the seventh member of Monty Python, as well as one of the main artists behind the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band in the late 1960s, who had been featured in the real Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour film. The original soundtrack and film were released in 1978, with fourteen songs on the original version of the soundtrack. When it was re-released on CD, six additional tracks from the film were added to the running order, bringing the total number of tracks up to twenty. The running order was also somewhat changed for the CD release. A soundtrack album entitled The Rutles containing 14 tongue-in-cheek pastiches of Beatles songs was also released. The CD reissue included the 6 other songs featured on the soundtrack that were not included in the vinyl LP. The cover art of the album suggested the existence of a number of other Rutles albums including Tragical History Tour and Let It Rot. The album contains send-ups of Beatles numbers such as Ouch .
